Can a life coach help me lose weight?

Life coaches will give you the edge and help you to finally crush your fitness goals
One of the major areas of life that Americans struggle with is achieving optimal health, their body, and their body image. While there are new businesses, trends, and fads sprouting up every day to help people achieve better health, the basics are incredibly well known - eat less, move more, and sleep enough. 

Yet every day, people give up on their fitness goals whether that be running a marathon or just fitting into the next pant size down. 

So what’s going wrong in a relatively simple and well-understood process? Is a life coach the missing key to weight loss?

Weight loss from the perspective of a life coach

Life coaches are usually not masters of fitness and nutrition, though we can be, but more often than not, a lack of knowledge in those areas is not the reason people fail to meet their goals. More often, it’s the inability to change or even understand our own negative behavior patterns.

What I as a life coach will look at with you if your goal is better health:

  1. Why? Like anything in personal progress, we start with the why. Conversations often go like this: Why do you want to get healthier? Because I want to look better. Okay, but why? Because I want to be more attractive. Great. But why? Because I want my husband to notice me more. Because I want to have enough energy to keep up with my kids. I want to be a role model for my kids and I don’t want them to struggle the way I always have. Because if I don’t do something I will die soon…. I can spend a whole session asking “why” sometimes. If you don’t have a “why” that sets you on fire, then your goal is dead in the water. And even when you find one, without constantly orienting yourself back to it, you’re going to lose your momentum.
  2. What does success look like? We are going to get really clear on exactly what your goal is. Is it hitting a goal weight? Is it looking a certain way? Is it just feeling like you can get through the day with exuberance and passion? It’s very difficult to hit a target if you don’t know what the target is and setting a clear goal makes this a far simpler task. Often times, people set a goal that they’re not really on board with, but “losing ten pounds” sounded like the right thing to do. Why are we really here? What do you want out of life and your fitness? What you aim at determines what you see. And when you find your aim and work with a coach you’re going to see tons of possibilities, options, and success.
  3. How to achieve your goal - The how in any goal usually becomes apparent and easily achievable once you have your “why” and your clarified goal. Is it time to join a gym? Start a plant-based diet? Run? Order some new workout clothes? Do 1 push up a day? Find a new fitness role model that matches your vision of success? Hire a fitness coach? The mechanics aren’t going to be your challenge here, but we’ll figure that out together.
  4. What is blocking you from success? with weight loss and body oriented goals, people don’t understand how they keep failing and they never figure it out - instead just choosing to beat themselves up over falling short over, and over, and over, and over again. Do you eat to be happy? Maybe every time you’re stressed at work (which can be often) you cruise over to the kitchen and grab a Pop Tart? Are you failing to make time for your workouts? As a life coach, we study bad patterns, how to identify, and how to break them.

Like any goal, we will figure out what you want, why you want it, how to get there, and how to get past whatever obstacle is in your way. What a good life coach knows can be applied to any area of your life and your fitness goals are an incredible example of this and the results are incredibly tangible. That’s why even the best personal trainers are starting to implement life coaching concepts into their practices.

We can always do what is right for our body and to have a mentor with us is a big help. There are different techniques that we need to do and we must follow that so that there will be great progress we just need to have that disciplined attitude. This attitude is a helpful trait that will help us to have a better life. A life that can be considered as a gift. We can all make this life a meaningful one.
